Endymion's Myth

In Greek mythology Endymion was a beautiful youth who spent much of his life in perpetual sleep. Zeus offered him anything that he might desire, and Endymion chose an everlasting sleep in which he might remain youthful forever. According to another version of the myth, Endymion's eternal sleep was a punishment inflicted by Zeus because he had ventured to fall in love with Zeus's wife, Hera. In any case, Endymion was loved by Selene, the goddess of the moon, who visited him every night while he lay asleep in a cave on Mount Latmus in Caria; she bore him 50 daughters. A common form of the myth represents Endymion as having been put to sleep by Selene herself so that she might enjoy his beauty.

Mythe d'Endymion

Dans la mythologie grecque, Endymion est un beau jeune homme qui passa presque toute sa vie à dormir. Zeus lui aurait offert d'exaucer son plus cher désir, et Endymion aurait choisi un sommeil éternel afin qu'il reste toujours jeune et beau. Une autre version de ce mythe raconte que ce sommeil éternel aurait en fait été un châtiment de la part de Zeus contre Endymion, pour être tombé amoureux de sa femme, Héra. Dans chaque version, Sélène, déesse de la lune, était amoureuse d'Endymion et lui rendait visite chaque nuit pendant qu'il dormait, sur le Mont Latmus et lui donnera 50 filles. Une autre version du mythe présente Endymion comme aillant été endormi par Sélène elle-même, afin qu'elle puisse profiter de sa beauté à loisir.
